ASTRA project
The ASTRA project was started in
Gloucester in 1997 with the primary aim of reducing the incidence of persistent
running away. ASTRA provides support, advice and information to young people up to the age of 18 who have run away. This might be from their family home, foster home or residential unit.
Few young people run away because they really want to. In the majority of cases a young person runs away because they feel that adults don't care, don't listen or don't understand.
We work with
anyone under 18 whose family home is in Gloucestershire, including young people living away from home. The ASTRA project is overseen by a multi-agency
steering group and managed by
Gloucestershire Youth & Community Service. ASTRA has gained national recognition
for its work with young runaways and has been recognised as a model
of good practice.
