The Children’s Society Research Unit - About us

In 1998, The Children’s Society, in partnership with the University of York, established the foundations of a team to undertake a national study of young people who run away or are forced out of home. Funding was provided by the Children’s Promise Millennium Appeal.

This culminated in a report title ‘Still Running’ - the first authoritative UK-wide study about young people running away. The report helped put the issue on the national policy making map and has been used by the Social Exclusion Unit.

The Research Unit has subsequently undertaken a national evaluation of projects working with young runaways. The Unit have also worked with local authorities and voluntary sector projects on different aspects of running away.

The team is currently involved in a national evaluation of young runaways projects on behalf of the CYPU. The team of researchers working on the project have been involved in a number of previous research and evaluation studies into the issues of young people running away and being on the streets.

If you have any queries or would like to discuss anything about the evaluation or other aspects of the research, please contact us:
